As your local guide to all things spooky, I’ve hit the ground running to bring you the best and most terrifying haunted houses in Northeast Ohio. Whether you’re looking for a gentle family scare or an hour-long plunge into true, sanity-questioning horror, I’ve broken down the must-see haunts by their fear factor.

Here is your Cleveland Haunted House Survival Guide. Get ready to scream, Bainbridge!

😊Tame Scares (Family Friendly & Low Intensity)

Looking for a fright that won't give your little ones (or yourself) nightmares for a month? These haunts are perfect for getting into the Halloween spirit with a lighter touch—think more goofy ghosts than bloody carnage.

The Old West Pumpkin Fest at Rockin' R Ranch

Location: Columbia Station (Just outside Cleveland)
Details: https://www.clevelandhayride.com/

More of a fall festival than a straight-up haunt, this is the perfect destination for daytime Halloween fun. While their main night-time event (see the Scary section) is intense, the Pumpkin Fest offers a Children's Haunted House with no live actors, making it truly "Not-So-Scary." You'll also find hayrides, pumpkin patches, pony rides, and a costume character show. It’s a full day of family fun that keeps the spirit of the season alive without the extreme trauma.

Hudson Haunted House (Select Sunday Matinees)

Location: Hudson, OH
Details: https://www.hudsonhauntedhouse.org/

Ohio's longest-running haunted attraction offers a great option for the slightly older, but not-quite-ready-for-gore crowd. They often host special Kid-Friendly Matinee events where the lights are on, the monsters take it easy (sometimes even unmasking for a photo!), and it becomes a fun trick-or-treat walk-through. Check their schedule before you go, but this volunteer-run classic is a great way to introduce the fun of a haunted house.

🫣Scary (High Intensity, Jump Scares, Gore)

Alright, now we're talking. These are the classic, high-octane haunted attractions that deliver non-stop jump scares, elaborate sets, and a general feeling of dread. Bring a friend to hide behind, you're going to need them.

Spooky Ranch at Rockin' R Ranch

Location: Columbia Station (Same place, much scarier at night!)
Details: https://www.spookyranch.com/

This is the nighttime transformation of the Rockin' R Ranch, and it’s a terrifying multi-attraction scream park. Nationally ranked, Spooky Ranch is known for its Haunted Hayride—often touted as Cleveland’s scariest—which takes you on a mile-long journey through a deep, dark forest full of professional actors and huge animatronics. They also feature a few different walk-through houses for a full evening of fright.

Bloodview Haunted House

Location: Broadview Heights
Details: https://www.bloodview.org/

Bloodview is a Northeast Ohio staple, run by the oldest improv horror acting troupe in the world, The Legion of Terror. What sets this one apart is the improvisational nature—the actors will engage with you, making every visit a unique and personalized scare. It's a charity haunt, so you can feel good about supporting a cause while being absolutely terrified.

Haunted Schoolhouse & Haunted Laboratory

Location: Akron, OH (A short drive south)
Details: https://www.hauntedschoolhouse.com/

This Akron institution has been scaring Ohioans for decades, operating two massive, separate haunts out of a creepy old schoolhouse and its adjacent laboratory. The sets are elaborate and the atmosphere is thick with history and decay. The sheer size and amount of terrifying detail here are what elevate it from a simple attraction to a true "scary" experience.

😱Epic Horror (Extreme, Immersive, Psychologically Disturbing)

These are the big leagues. The attractions listed here are massive in scale, often nationally recognized, and push the boundaries of fear with immersive storylines, disturbing themes, and a sheer volume of horrifying detail. You will be exhausted and you will question your life choices.

Nightmare Cleveland

Location: 7460 Brookpark Rd, Cleveland
Details: https://nightmarecleveland.com/

A relative newcomer to the haunt scene, this haunted house is created by the same team that does Chippewa Lake Slaughterhouse, so they know their stuff. Located in an old strip mall this haunt brings elaborate set designs, special effects, and high energy the actors, creating a very intense and immersive theatrical production. You can opt for the “touch pass” for an even more intense experience.

7 Floors of Hell

Location: Middleburg Heights (Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds)
Details: https://7floorsofhell.com/

This is more than a haunted house; it's an entire "scream park" that boasts seven separate, full-sized haunted attractions in one location. Set on the fairgrounds, you'll be running from one nightmare to the next. The attractions change annually, but you can always count on high production value, relentless scares, and a truly epic amount of terrifying content. Give yourself a few hours for this one, and prepare for sensory overload!

Factory of Terror

Location: Canton, OH (A drive, but worth it)
Details: https://fotohio.com/

For sheer scale, you can't beat this Guinness World Record holder (it’s been recognized multiple times as one of the largest indoor haunted houses in the world). Spread across a massive 150,000 square foot space, Factory of Terror consists of five unique attractions that feel like they go on forever. The industrial setting, huge rooms, and professional-grade effects manufacture nightmares on a truly massive scale. This is a must-do for any hardcore haunt enthusiast.

Chippewa Lake Slaughterhouse

Location: Chippewa Lake, OH
Details: https://slaughterhouseohio.com/

Set in an actual former slaughterhouse, this haunt leans into raw, gritty, and visceral horror. It's an immersive experience that capitalizes on the inherently creepy history of its location. Known for its intense focus on the horrifying theme and Hollywood-quality sets, this is the place to go if you want a dark, twisted, and extremely memorable descent into one of Ohio's most feared legends.

Other Notable Haunts

Want to visit a real haunted house? Take a tour of Franklin Castle in Ohio City. If you are brave, stay the night!

Are you in the mood for a world-class scream at one of the most frightening places in the US? Then you need to make the drive to Mansfield to visit the Ohio State Reformatory. This building housed inmates for nearly 100 years until it was in too deep of disrepair. A non-profit took over the building and restored it to it’s original beauty. Since then it has appeared in numerous films, most notably Shawshank Redemption. However, in October, it transforms into Blood Prison, one of the scariest haunted houses in the nation!

There you have it, Bainbridge! From a playful hayride to a multi-hour scream marathon, your guide to the best haunted houses in Northeast Ohio is complete. Grab your tickets, say a little prayer, and I'll see you on the other side... if you make it out alive!
